FCEA Board Meeting

10/20/04 at 7 pm

The Dining Room of the Gulfstream Hotel

Present:  Kevin Morgan and Julia Rawa, Co-Presidents; Steve Brahlek,

Vice-President; Jane Jones, Web Weaver; Richard McKee, representing Florida English;

Helen Connell, Newsletter Editor; Susan Nugent, Immediate Past President; Mary

(Dusty) Maddox, Board Member.

1. Kevin and Julia welcomed us to this meeting.  Kevin reported that in the

treasury, FCEA has $2,586.41.

2. Steve Brahlek overviewed some of the special events of the conference

including "Murder in the Cathedral" being performed at PBCC.

3. The Nominating Committee reported the people presently being considered

for offices and for  board members.  Other names were suggested.  Nominating

Board members left with their assignments.

4. Membership Committee – Julia reported that she had contacted chairs, but

recognized that the hurricanes hitting the various schools this fall has

resulted in lower membership than usual.

The board considered a number of possibilities for developing membership.  It

was decided that a mailing (in contrast to simply e-mailing) is absolutely

necessary.  Kevin, Julia, and Steve will put together a packet of materials

concerning FCEA.  They will then gain the support of all board members.  Each

board member will take packets to Chairs and Departments near them.

5. Distinguished Colleague Award – Susan reported that everything went

smoothly with the decision-making process.

6. Florida English – Much time was spent discussing issues surrounding this

periodical.  Some confusion has existed over whether or not this is a Florida

College English Association Journal.  Members all agreed that by the Board

appointing an editor for this journal, the assumption was made that FCEA would be

the sponsor.  We all agreed that this problem needs to be resolved.  So

instead of placing the blame, we decided to move forward with some guidelines.

The Board agreed to support the journal at the level of $500.  Given increase

in memberships and considering other expenses of the organization, this may

be raised.  In turn, Florida English needs to include "A Florida College

English Association Publication" clearly on the cover.  Inside, again, the journal

needs to be listed as sponsored by FCEA with support from others listed as

secondary.

The editors of Florida English  were commended for the quality of the journal.

7. Other Business:

A. The February meeting, to be held on the second Saturday in February, will

be held at DeVries College.  Dusty will arrange the meeting.

B. Susan reported that FADE has faded.  The board agreed that it was time to

let FADE disappear for awhile.
